TOOLING
MECHANIC

M/F/X

Tooling mechanics manufacture die-cutting tools, casting and injection moulds as well as devices for industrial series production and mechanical engineering. These are produced using CNC-controlled and programmed machine tools. With the help of lathes, milling, grinding and drilling machines, you will produce the individual components of the often complex tools and moulds. In doing so, you will need to adhere precisely to the dimensions specified in the technical drawings. The duties of a tool mechanic range from assembly and carrying out test runs to inspection and maintenance.

I am being trained as a tooling mechanic

Why did you decide to take up an apprenticeship in this profession?

I chose to become a tooling mechanic because I really enjoy working with different materials with a great degree of precision, meticulousness, and accuracy. Another reason for my choice of apprenticeship was that I get to work on machines, something I really enjoyed doing at vocational school.

What does your day-to-day look like?

As a future tooling mechanic, I make die-cutting tools for industrial plastics processing. Maintenance and repair work are also part of my job. During my apprenticeship, I am taught the basics of the various machining processes and how to use CNC machines. Hence, my daily work consists of servicing and maintaining different tools. I do assembly work, milling, grinding, drilling, turning and sawing. This variety is a lot of fun for me.

What qualifications should applicants have and what are their prospects?

With a good secondary school leaving certificate with good marks in mathematics and physics as well as technical understanding and manual dexterity, I am able to successfully accomplish the tasks assigned to me. Also, after this apprenticeship, I can take external courses to become an industrial foreman or technician. I can also choose to do degree in a technical field.
